Modern Vision Correction

What is SMILE®?

SMILE® (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is a laser vision correction procedure designed to treat nearsightedness and, in many cases, astigmatism. Instead of creating a corneal flap, your surgeon uses a femtosecond laser to create a small, lens-shaped piece of tissue (called a lenticule) inside the cornea. The lenticule is then removed through a small incision to reshape the cornea and improve vision.

Many patients choose SMILE because it’s a small-incision approach and may be a great option for people who want a flap-free laser procedure.

Why Patients Choose SMILE®

  • Flap-free procedure with a small incision
  • Designed to correct nearsightedness (and in many cases astigmatism)
  • Quick procedure and typically fast return to normal routines
  • A great option for many active lifestyles (eligibility varies)

Getting Started

The first step is a consultation to see if you’re a good candidate for SMILE®. Your surgeon will review your vision goals and perform detailed measurements such as your prescription, corneal shape and thickness, and overall eye health to determine whether SMILE is the right fit.

If you qualify, they’ll confirm whether SMILE can address your prescription (including astigmatism when appropriate) and walk you through what to expect, pricing, and next steps.

What Happens During the SMILE® Procedure?

On procedure day, numbing drops help keep you comfortable. Your surgeon uses the laser to create the lenticule and a small access incision, then removes the lenticule through that incision to reshape the cornea. Most patients are surprised by how quick the process feels.

After the procedure, you’ll use prescribed eye drops and you’ll typically be seen for follow-up soon after. Since your vision may be adjusting, please bring someone to drive you home safely.
